Family Tree


This blog is about the descendants of Alexander Bain (?1775-?] and Margaret Chisholm [?1780-?]. They married in 1796 in Dingwall, but there is so much more to learn about them.


Known children of Alexander Bain and Margaret Chisholm 

Three of their known children had families of their own - John, Alexander [my x3 great grandfather] and William. I have found DNA matches to John and William.

John and his wife Helen Clark had 11 children, those with descendants are marked in red:

Alexander and his wife Catherine Matheson also had 11 children, those with descendants are marked in red:

Alexander [1832-?] was the first sibling to emigrate to Australia 

Margaret [1833-1915] married BUCHAN in Australia

Christina [1835-1923] married MACKAY but had no children

Catherine [1837- before 1842]

Wynie [1840-1920] married MacLENNAN, now clan chiefs

Kerr/Catherine [1842-1922] married MATHESON

Mary Ann [1845-1938] married MELLOR in Australia

Murdo [1848-1907]

Caroline [1949-1904] married ABLE in Australia

Jessie [1851-?]

Donald [1857-1931], married but no children

William and his wife Catherine Mackenzie had only one child,  late in his life:

Margaret Bain was born on 10 May 1833 at Highfield, Ross-shire. So says her baptismal record and so says her passenger records of her emigration to the Australian colonies, which was confirmation that the Margaret on the Mary Pleasants was the right one! Chisholm or Chisolm - who?

Margaret Chisholm, our Bain matriarch, enters our story in 1796, when she married one of the Alexander Bains. They married in Dingwall, with the only clue being that her father was the late Don Chisolm "or Millan".  There is only one Margaret whose father was called Don born in Ross-shire on ScotlandsPeople.  This child was born in 1785 in Kiltearn, so she is is too young to marry in 1796. I have found only one Margaret born on the border of Ross-shire and Inverness-shire whose father was Donald.  She was born on 1 January 1780 in the parish of Kiltarlity, and baptised on 11 January. This girl's parents were Don Chisholm and Margaret Cameron . Is she the right Margaret? How can we possibly know? One approach is to wonder how likely it is that a girl born in Inverness-shire married a man in Dingwall in Ross-shire?
